What Inspections Should Be Done Before Starting The Diesel Generator Set

The storage period of diesel engine of diesel generator set is one year. If the diesel engine has passed the storage period specified above since the date of delivery, special attention shall be paid to the sealing inspection before use. (1) Check whether the surface of the unit is thoroughly cleaned. Check whether the nuts of foundation bolts, flywheel screws and other moving parts are loose, and tighten them in time if any problems are found.

(2) Check whether the clearance of each part is correct, especially carefully check whether the clearance of each inlet and exhaust valve and the clearance of pressure reducing mechanism meet the requirements.

(3) Place each cylinder in the pressure reducing position, turn the crankshaft to check whether the engine parts of each cylinder have abnormal sound, and whether the crankshaft rotates freely. At the same time, pump the oil into each friction surface. Then, close the pressure reducing mechanism, shake the crankshaft, and check whether the cylinder has air leakage. If it is very hard to shake the crankshaft, it means that the compression is normal.

(4) Check the condition of the fuel supply system.

① Check whether the vent hole on the fuel tank cap is unblocked. If there is dirt in the hole, clean it. Check whether the added diesel meets the required brand and whether the fuel quantity is sufficient, and turn on the oil circuit switch.

② Open the pressure reducing mechanism and crank the crankshaft. There should be a clear sound of oil injection in each cylinder, indicating that the oil injection is good. If there is no sound of oil injection and no oil coming, there may be air in the oil circuit. At this time, loosen the bleed screw of the diesel filter and the fuel injection pump to remove the air in the oil circuit.

③ Check whether there is oil leakage at the oil pipe and joint, and timely solve the problems found.

④ Fill the fuel injection pump and governor with oil to the specified oil level.

(5) Check the condition of the cooling system.

① Check whether the cooling water in the water tank is sufficient. If the water is insufficient, add enough clean soft water.

② Check whether there is water leakage at the water pipe joint, and timely solve the problems found.

③ Check whether the impeller of the cooling water pump rotates flexibly and whether the drive belt is properly tightened.

(6) Check the lubrication system.

① Check whether there is oil leakage at the oil pipe and pipe joint, and timely solve the problems found.

② The grease fittings shall be filled with specified lubricating grease.

③ Check the oil level of the oil pan, draw out the dipstick beside the crankcase, observe whether the oil level height meets the specified requirements, and add the specified grade of oil according to the different seasons and regions. During the inspection, if the oil level is found to be higher than the specified height, the reasons for the increase of oil should be carefully analyzed. Generally, there are three reasons:

(a) Add too much oil.

(b) The diesel leaks into the crankcase and the engine oil is diluted.

(c) Cooling water leaks into the oil.

(7) Check the electric starting system.

① First check whether the relative density of the starting battery electrolyte is within the range of 1.240~1.280. If the relative density is less than 1.180, it indicates that the battery is low.

② Check whether the circuit wiring is correct.

③ Check whether there is dirt or oxidation on the battery terminal, and polish it clean.

④ Check whether the electrical contact of starting motor and electromagnetic control mechanism is good.

Working principle:

In the air cylinder of diesel generator, The clean air filtered by the air filter is fully mixed with the high-pressure silent diesel fuel injected by the injector. Under the pressure of the piston upward, the volume of the diesel fuel decreases and the temperature rises rapidly, reaching the ignition point of the diesel fuel. Diesel fuel is ignited, mixed air burns rapidly and volume expands rapidly, which pushes forward plunger down, this called “ work”. Every air cylinder works in a sorted order, the thrust acting on the plunger passes through the connecting rod and becomes the force driving the crankshaft to rotate, thus driving the crankshaft to rotate. When the brushless generator is coaxially installed with the crankshaft of the diesel engine, the rotation of the diesel engine can be used to drive the rotor of the generator, using the principle of “electromagnetic induction”, the generator will emit the induced electromotive force, and the current can be generated through the closed load loop.

Fuel System

The fuel system of the standard diesel generator includes: fuel tank, fuel supply pump, fuel filter, manual oil pump, fuel injection pump, fuel injection nozzle and related oil pipeline.

Only fuels that meet the quality specified in the following standards shall be used. It must be kept clean during refueling and fuel system operation. When working on the fuel system, it must be confirmed that the engine has cooled down. The splash of fuel on hot surface or electrical components may cause a fire.

Fuel specification

The composition of the diesel oil has a very important effect on the operation and service life and the emission components of the diesel engine. In order to obtain the specified power, fuel economy and the emission standards specified by the local environmental protection department, only clean light fuel that meets international and national standards should be used.

Light diesel oil is used for fuel in high-speed diesel engines above 1000r/min. The current standard for light diesel oil products is GB252-2000 “light diesel oil” standard. The grade of diesel oil is based on the freezing point of diesel. Customers should choose the appropriate diesel grade according to the temperature of the workplace.

Attentions

a. The fuel recommended in the operating manual must be used. For diesel engines, the use of low-quality fuel can cause the control rod to stick and the engine to rotate at an excessive speed, resulting in damage to the generating set or even serious personal injury. Inferior fuel will also shorten the maintenance cycle, increase maintenance costs, and reduce the normal service life of the gen set.

b. When adding fuel, there is usually a risk of fire and explosion. No smoking when refueling.

c. Do not allow the fuel oil to overflow the fuel tank. The fuel tank cover should be sealed safely.

d. Water in the fuel can cause corrosion of metal parts in the fuel system, and it can easily cause fungi and microorganisms to grow in the tank, which can block the filter. When the fuel water content is relatively large, it is recommended that the user install a oil-water separator for the genset. Make sure that the fuel entering the body is free of water or other impurities. All models of medium and high units can be equipped with oil-water separators according to the requirements of users. The oil-water separators are not part of the standard configuration when the unit leaves the factory. When users need to order, it should be separately stated.

Replace fuel filter

a. Keep it clean and do not allow any dirt to enter the fuel system.

b. In order to avoid fuel splashing on hot surface and causing fire, the fuel filter replacement must be carried out under the condition of cooling machine.

c. Remove the filter and apply a little oil to the gasket of the new filter. Screw the filter by hand to bring the gasket into contact with the seat. Then tighten again, do not screw more, and exhaust the air from the fuel system.

d. Start the unit and check for leaks.

Fuel injection pump

a. The fuel injection pump is driven by a timing gear transmission mechanism in the diesel engine. The pump setting is measured with a lift meter when the base circle of a particular crankshaft angle rises.

b. The fuel injection pumps used in medium and high diesel generator sets are superior in quality and reliable in performance, which can ensure the long-term normal use of users.

Fuel spray nozzle

a. Equal distribution of fuel oil for reliable ignition and combustion.

b. Inject fuel oil directly into the combustion chamber and provide optimal mixture of fuel oil and air. The injection pressure can be pre-adjusted by a spring.

1.A little or no fuel injected.

Causes:

(1) There is air in the fuel supply system.

(2) Seizure of the fuel injector nozzle.

(4) Oil leak at high-pressure fuel pipes.

How to maintain Cummins diesel generators with coolant?

1.Heating water in winter

In cold winter, the engine is difficult to start. If cold water is filled before starting, it is easy to freeze in the water tank water chamber and water inlet pipe, which makes the water unable to cycle or even make the water tank crack. Hot water can be added to improve the engine temperature for easy start-up; on the other hand, the above freezing phenomenon can be avoided as far as possible.

2.Antifreeze should be of high quality

If there is no preservative in the antifreeze, it will seriously corrode the engine cylinder head, water jacket, radiator, water stop ring, rubber parts and other components, and produce a lot of scale, which will lead to poor heat dissipation and overheating of the engine. Therefore, we must choose the products of regular manufacturers.

3.Replenish soft water in time

After filling antifreeze in the water tank, if it is found that the liquid level of the water tank decreases, on the premise of ensuring no leakage, only clean soft water (distilled water is better), because the boiling point of ethylene glycol antifreeze is high, and the evaporation is the water in the antifreeze. It is not necessary to add antifreeze, but only soft water. It is worth mentioning: never add hard water without softening.

4.Discharge antifreeze in time to reduce corrosion

Whether it is ordinary antifreeze or long-term antifreeze, when the temperature becomes higher, it should be released in time, so as to prevent the corrosion of parts. Because the preservatives added in the antifreeze will gradually reduce or fail with the extension of service time, what’s more, some simply do not add preservatives, which will have a strong corrosive effect on the parts. Therefore, the antifreeze should be discharged in time according to the temperature, and the cooling pipeline should be thoroughly cleaned after the antifreeze is discharged.

5.Open the water tank cover when discharging coolant

If the cover of the water tank is not opened, part of the cooling water can flow out, but with the decrease of the water volume in the radiator, a certain degree of vacuum will be generated due to the sealing of the water tank, and the water flow will slow down or stop. In winter, the parts will be frozen due to unclean water discharge.

6.It is not advisable to discharge coolant immediately at high temperature

Before the engine stalls, if the engine temperature is very high, do not stop immediately to drain water. The load should be removed first to idle the engine. When the water temperature drops to 40-50 ℃, the water will be drained to prevent the temperature of the cylinder block, cylinder head and water jacket in contact with water from dropping suddenly due to sudden water discharge, and the temperature inside the cylinder block is still very high and the shrinkage is small. It is easy to make it easy to make it because of the excessive temperature difference between the inside and outside cracks are found in cylinder block and cylinder head.

7.Idle the engine after draining coolant in cold winter

In the cold winter, the engine should be started to idle for a few minutes after the cooling water in the engine is discharged. This is mainly because some water may remain in the water pump and other parts after the water is discharged. After the engine is started again, the residual water in the water pump and other parts can be dried by the body temperature, so as to ensure that there is no water in the engine and prevent the phenomenon of water leakage caused by the freezing of the water pump and the tearing of the water seal.

If diesel generator set is difficult to start, or shut down soon after starting, it can be judged that hat the air is mixed in the oil circuit, and the air in the oil circuit will bring a lot of obstacles to the operation, which will make the generator set difficult to start or shut down.

The main reason of air mixed in oil circuit is that at least one of the injector needle valve pairs of diesel generator is worn and the seal is not tight, which makes the combustion gas channeling through the injector into the oil return system, resulting in a large amount of gas in the oil return system.

After occur this, if return oil of injector is directly return to fuel tank, the direct impact on the operation of diesel generator setis relatively small. But if the return oil of the injector is connected to the fuel filter, it will have a serious impact on the operation of the diesel generator. Therefore, after occur this problem, should first check all injectors, and repair or replace needle valve couple.

How to find the leakage point in the pipeline and stop it?

The fuel supply system of diesel generator can be divided into low pressure oil circuit and high pressure oil circuit. The low-pressure oil circuit refers to the oil circuit from the fuel tank to the low-pressure oil cavity of the fuel injection pump, and the high-pressure oil circuit refers to the oil circuit from the plunger cavity of the high-pressure pump to the fuel injection nozzle. Here we talk about leakage point in low pressure oil circuit.

The following is the method to determine the leakage point of low pressure oil circuit.

Method 1: Exhaust the air in the oil circuit and find out the leakage of diesel oil after starting the engine.

Method 2: Loosen the bleed screw of the engine fuel injection pump and pump oil with the manual oil pump. If it is found that the bleed screw begins to discharge a large amount of bubble oil flow, and the bubble still does not disappear after repeated hand pumping, it can be determined that there is a leakage point in the negative pressure oil circuit from the oil tank to the oil delivery pump. The pipeline should be taken down, then the pressure gas should be introduced and placed in the water to find out where the bubble is.

In addition to the problems of the pipeline, the various gaskets at the pipeline joints will also leak due to improper installation, deformation, aging and damage, and become leakage points. Before the detailed inspection of the pipeline, these nodes should be inspected first.

How to remove air in oil circuit of diesel generators?

1.Routine Method

Use a screw driver or spanner to loosen any air release screw on both sides of the fuel injection pump for several turns, continuously press the manual oil pump by hand until the diesel oil is discharged, and there are no bubbles and squeaking sound.Then tighten the bleed screw and press the manual oil pump back to its original position, as shown in Figure 1-1. The exhaust method of unit pump oil system is shown in Figure 1-2.

2.Non-routine method (emergency case)

1)If you don’t have a suitable screw driver or wrench to open the bleed screw on the fuel injection pump, you can turn on the manual oil pump first, then loosen any connection from the diesel filter to the fuel injection pump, then repeatedly press the manual oil pump to the joint to discharge the unobstructed and bubble free oil flow, then press the manual oil pump while tightening the joint, and finally press the manual oil pump back to its original position.

2)When there is no wrench to loosen the pipe joint, the manual oil pump can be pressed repeatedly, unit the oil pressure of the low-pressure oil circuit between the oil transfer pump and the injection pump is high enough, the fuel flows into the fuel return pipeline from the relief valve, the gas in the oil circuit will be discharged from the overflow.

3)If you need to exhaust the air in the oil circuit, you can first loosen the bleed screw on the injection pump or loosen any connector between the diesel filter and the injection pump. Then start the driving mechanical oil pump, the leakage point will spray out the fuel without bubbles.   At this time, tighten the loosen the above leakage point to exhaust the air.

If air is mixed in the oil circuit of the diesel generator set, the air will affect the operation of the diesel generator set, so regular inspection and maintenance is very necessary, and the air in the oil circuit should be found and remove in time.
